My Grandma's a Fat Whore in Jersey,
the first in
WNEP's "Black Box" series, was described by Cayne
Collier (improviser and host of "The Elevated") as being
"the best improv show I've ever seen."
With just Matt Kaye and Jen Ellison onstage
for an hour, the results of
this long form improv/performance art mixture included
characters that ranged from the oversexed to the mentally
retarded. Conceived of and directed by Don Hall, "Fat
Whore" was as existential as it was gross, as funny as it
was often moving.
"Jen
Ellison and Matt Kaye are gifted physical comedians. And they have the book
smarts
and the chemistry
to make a show like this work... Ellison and Kaye do a good job of
exploiting silence--a quality rarely found in Chicago improv...
surrealistic mime sequences...flashes of brilliance..."
-- Chicago Reader

"Fat Whore is tremendously brave
theater. Matt Kaye and Jen Ellison have created an hour-plus show
that is wild and unfocused, alternately screamingly loud and
interminably silent, over-the-top physical and marvelously
subtle. Embracing traditional forms of improvisation when it
suits them, but more often eschewing them entirely, the two actors
have done the impossible in a town bursting with improv shows: Put
one up that is unique and worth seeing. Though there are
inevitable missteps, Fat Whore is to be lauded simply for
existing; more than that, however, it is very, very fun. The deep
trust and few-holds-barred camaraderie between Ellison and Kaye
result in exceptional character work, clever and original scene
shifts, and all the other elements that should be in an improv show
with nine people, let alone two." (Recommended - listed as one of
the top five shows to see in 1999)
