skald (skäld) n. An ancient Viking poet; bard; storyteller Rooted in the oral traditions of nearly every organized society, storytelling is theater stripped of all its ‘dazzle camouflage’ and focuses strictly on the qualities of story and teller. WNEP Theater has been holding the SKALD Competition annually since 1999. In cooperation with the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, WNEP presents SKALD 8 – The Eighth Annual Skald Storytelling Competition beginning Wednesday, June 13 at 7:00 p.m. with the SKALD Forum, continuing Thursday, June 14 at 8:00 p.m. with the KIDSKALD, Friday, June 15 at 8:00 p.m. with The Maelstrom Contest, and concluding Saturday, June 16 at 8:00 p.m. with SKALD 8. Tickets are $10.00 (KIDSKALD), $15.00 (MAELSTROM) and $25.00 (SKALD 8). The SKALD Forum is free to the public. All performances take place in the DCA Studio Theater in the Chicago Cultural Center, 77 E. Randolph St., Chicago. Reservations can be made by going to www.dcatheater.org or by calling 312-742-TIXS.
KIDSKALD features ten “apprentice” storytellers from ages 8 – 14 as they compete for a three-tiered title and gift certificates. SKALD Forum is a panel discussion on modern storytelling featuring professional storytellers and noted historians. MAELSTROM is an improvised storytelling contest pitting six professional storytellers as they spin extemporaneous yarns inspired by suggestions from the audience. SKALD 8 features ten storytellers as they compete for the title of “Supreme SKALD,” a cash prize and gift certificates. In addition to the listed performances, WNEP will be hosting Storytelling Workshops, free to the public, on Monday, June 11 (at both 12:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.) and Tuesday, June 12 (at both 12:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.).
